R. S. Breed writes literary science fiction about the space between what the universe is doing and what the people inside it can understand about it.
He has been building the Fracture Cosmology for more than twenty years: the universe, its people and their stories, grown and reworked the whole time. He didn’t come to writing late. He came to publishing late. For years the answer from publishers was mostly silence, so in the end he stopped waiting and began publishing the books himself.
Writing ran alongside everything else. He has been a police officer. He has run his own franchised retail businesses and worked inside large corporations long enough to learn exactly how bureaucracy moves, and why. For years he kept high-end technology and infrastructure running, the kind of systems nobody notices until they fail, across more industries than fit comfortably on one CV.
All of it ends up on the page. The Fracture Cosmology is one connected universe spanning eight centuries, where institutions behave like institutions, technology is furniture until it breaks, and ordinary people make decisions with incomplete information and then live with them. Every series stands on its own; the connections reward readers who find them. There are 44 novels so far.
The road to publishing showed him how hard the industry is to get into. Authors are handed a lot of bad information and very little support, and a long line of services charge steep fees to help. Writers are good at writing, not at finding their way through all that, which is why he founded Bervet: a free home where independent authors list their own books and readers can try the first chapter before they buy.
